Our advice is, try not to get emotional when buying a road car as this way you're less likely to get emotional while you're driving it. However,

• if you really need to buy a three tonne Hummer to make yourself feel bigger then so be it. At least Shell will love you.
• if you buy a car with 155mph speed restrictor, then try to find a way to de-restrict it. What's the point of a castrated engine?
• a small lightweight car can provide a lot of good clean fun, but try to avoid crashing into a Hummer.
• if you really do want to experience the thrill of speed then consider taking up competition driving. It's more acceptable to total your chariot when competing.

It's a tricky subject giving advice on cars but one thing to consider is the total cost of ownership. A good question to ask when buying is, 'When I come to sell this car, will I still be glad I bought it?'.
